Never heard of a U2-Eucharist (some call it a U2charist)? Show up Friday evening at 10 p.m. when Bono and his band U2 set the Episcopal liturgy to a contemporary beat. (Never heard of Bono? Ask any teenager.)
"The U2 Eucharist is based on the traditional Episcopal Service," says the Rev. Bur Dobbins, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, Victoria, who is one of the event coordinators. " It has a Gospel reading, prayers of the people, and communion from the Book of Common Prayer. However, the music makes this a different experience." The songs, says Dobbins, are deeply and openly spiritual.
The U2 Eucharist was first used at an Episcopal church in York Harbor, Maine, in July 2005 and has been spreading across the country since.
The Christian themes in U2's music have been widely recognized, and Bono, the band's leader, is known for his social activism, particularly in the areas of global reconciliation, justice for the poor and the oppressed, and the importance of caring for one's neighbor. At a rally in Philadelphia Bono helped launched ONE – The Campaign to Make Poverty History. The U2 Eucharists help support the ONE campaign
Following the Friday evening Eucharist, the young people will bed down on the floor of the parish hall at Church of the Good Shepherd. On Saturday morning, they will join Council to be commissioned as "missioners of the diocese," then go to Cliff Maus Village, a government-subsidized apartment complex that was founded and is supported by the Episcopal churches of Corpus Christi, for a work-day.
All young people in grades eight through 12 are invited to participate in the YOU 2 YOUth Mission. Cost is $10, and registrations must be made by February 19. All participants will receive a t-shirt, pizza, breakfast and lunch on Saturday. One adult sponsor must accompany every six young people. REGISTRATION OPENS TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2007.
